The Flat Tops are a vast wilderness with multiple trails and access points. I will cover access from Yampa. Take the road to Cold Springs Campground at Stillwater Reservoir. There is a nice short trail north to Smith Lake. For an extensive trail - overnight - take the trail south from Stillwater Reservoir and cut left to Edge Lake once on the Located in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, visitors are drawn to this trail which features a narrow "land bridge" that is 50 feet in length, narrowing to as little as 4 feet in width, and has drops of several hundred feet on each side. There is no rope or rail to aide in the causeway crossing so use caution and proceed at your own risk. The trail is mostly forested until reaching Little The Flat Tops Trail is a remarkable place to get away to and enjoy nature in Northwest Colorado. Connecting Meeker and Yampa, this 82 mile byway is suitable for mostly all cars. Gas up in Meeker or Yampa, as there is no where else to fill once on the drive. The drive takes anywhere from 2.5 hours and up, depending on stops. Camping opportunities abound within the White River National Forest, and at its heart is the Flat Tops Wilderness, a precious expanse of open land. This vast landscape of subalpine forest, sheer cliffs and alpine tundra is one of the best-kept secrets among bird watchers and counts itself as part of the Colorado Birding Trail. The Flat Tops Wilderness spans the Routt National Forest and White River National Forest. Elevations range from 7,640 to 12,354 feet. This is the third largest Wilderness in Colorado. The United States Congress designated the Flat Tops Wilderness in 1975, and it now has a total of 235,214 acres.
