Wittenham Clumps are a pair of wooded chalk hills in the Thames Valley, On Sinodun Hill is a hollow named the Money-Pit and a clump of trees named the Cuckoo Pen. The Money-Pit is supposedly the location of a treasure Wittenham Clumps are made of chalk and greensand clay. Their unique shape was created around 40 to 60 million years ago when two tectonic plates collided to form the Berkshire Downs. Buttercups wait atop the twin peaks of the Berkshire Downs. These are the oldest known planted hilltop beeches in England, dating back over 300 years. Local poet, Joseph Tubb, carved a wonderful poem in the bark of a beech tree on Castle Wittenham Clumps atop Sinodun Hills (geography.org.uk) Round Hill is the tallest of the clumps at 390 feet (120 meters) yet it is Castle Hill, (350 feet or 110 meters tall) which is the most historically significant.
