It emphasises the importance of undertaking a visual assessment of the patient's skin and palpating the veins to identify a suitable site for venepuncture. The optimal sites for venepuncture are the veins in the antecubital fossa - the Venepuncture is the term used for the procedure of withdrawing blood from a vein with a needle. Venepuncture is an aseptic procedure. This means the way in which staff obtain a blood sample helps to prevent any contamination.
