Jebel Akhdar: Distance: Only about 40km from Nizwa but steep, windy roads. Takes about 30 mins to get to the check point, then another 20-30 minutes to reach the good view points and villages. Time allowance: recommend 3-5 hours round trip from Nizwa. The journey from Muscat to Al Jabal Al Akhdar takes about two hours and can only be undertaken by four-wheel drive. Al Jabal Al Akhdar is known for its Mediterranean climate. Temperatures drop during winter to below zero Celsius, with snow falling at times, and rise in summer to 22 degrees Celsius. Due to its location and unique weather, the Jebel Akhdar is situated in the north-eastern region of Oman, in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Landmarks of Jebel Akhdar: One of the defining features of Jebel Akhdar is its rugged and dramatic landscape. The mountain range reaches elevations of over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) and is characterized by deep canyons, towering cliffs, and rocky slopes. Day 1: Beat the heat at Anantara al Jabal Al Akhdar. Temperatures in Muscat soar above 90°F (32°C) for more than seven months of the year. Oman isn't exactly teeming with tourists, but the off season is from April through September when the temperatures can become unbearably hot. Already during our April visit, temperatures exceeded 100°F The Jebel Akhdar massif is a very large scale 60 km wavelength anticline plunging to the northwest beneath the Hawasina Window. The fold axis curves from WNW-ESE (Jebel Shams) to NNE-SSW (Jebel Nakhl) and back to E-W aligned towards Semail (Fig. 10.2).This is a fold interference pattern caused by a dominant NE-SW compressive stress, accompanied by a subsidiary WNW-ESE compression forming the Oman, Middle East. Without a guide or some inside information, Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) may seem something of a misnomer to the first-time visitor. Firstly, Jebel Akhdar refers not to a mountain as such, but to an area that encompasses the great Saiq Plateau, at 2000m above sea level.
