Cued Speech combines handshapes and placements with mouth movements to represent the consonants and vowels of a language. The complete American English system is taught through 14 classes, with an additional class providing extra practice. Cued Cued Speech is a system of distinct handshapes and movements used in different locations near the mouth to visually depict the sounds and syllables of spoken language. It is not a language like ASL or other signed languages. It is generally used to support oral speech and language development, speechreading, and literacy by providing a visual Cued Articulation. Cued Articulation [CA] was devised by Speech and Language Therapist Jane Passy in the late 1970s. It is an original system which uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are made. Each of the 49 sounds (phonemes) which make up the English Phonological System has a separate hand sign.
