Nuclear stewardship. ANSTO is Australia's nuclear centre of excellence. It has a mandated role to advise the Australian Government on all nuclear and science technology matters. ANSTO is a public research organisation responsible for delivering advice, scientific services and products across areas of health, environment & nuclear fuel cycle. HIFAR was Australia's first national research reactor. It was central to the research that occurred at ANSTO and it operated safely and reliably for almost 50 years. The reactor was in operation between 1958 and 2007, when it was superseded by OPAL - the Open Pool Australian lightwater reactor. The purpose of HIFAR was to produce neutrons for ANSTO conducts and enables research to address some of Australia's and the world's most challenging environmental problems. Find out more.
