A tepidarium was a warm Roman bath, and the woman in the painting holds a strigel which was used for scraping the skin after it was soaped and oiled. This work show enormous technical skill in rendering surfaces, perhaps reflecting Alma-Tadema's Dutch origins. The tepidarium is a warm bath in the Roman culture. Since Lawrence was influenced by the Roman culture in most of his painting as is seen in this painting. The painting shows a beautiful lady lying on a couch after a bath. The style used in the tepidarium painting is Romanticism.
