As one of the older active bands in the melodic death metal subgenre with over three decades of history, Kalmah has often been the subject of praise for the quality and consistency of its music throughout its 25-year-long run. Although it generally delivers and fulfils it with JJMarmite I, foolishly, completely missed this had come out but I don't even need to listen to a single track to know I need this. Never has a Kalmah album failed to do anything other than leave me entirely satisfied. Top fucking notch, every single time. Not bad for guys I heard once by accident on Spotify, like, over a decade ago on a soundtrack album to some Finnish television show I'd It's a very well-produced, disciplined album that goes further into a melodic death frame than the power / black one that put the finish on their previous melodic death works. From the riffs to the melodies, The Black Waltz is an album with a one phenomenal peak, a couple highlights, and then a drop-off of good songs.
