Duboisia hopwoodii: Perennial shrub to 3 m, sometimes as small tree with brown to purplish bark on the young stems and corky older bark. Leaves are narrow, long and alternate to 15 cm, with recurved point and straight margins. Open clusters of white (with purple striped tube) flowers at the end of the branches. Black berry to 6 mm, containing Alkaloids of Duboisia hopwoodii Roots. Hyoscyamine. The powdered roots (500 g) were extrd and yielded 2.4g of a crude extract which was fractionated into seven fractions. Hyoscyamine was the major alkaloid in fractions 3-7. The base (0.4g) from fraction 4 gave hyoscyamine picrate, mp 166 (Found: C, 53.28; H, 5.02 %.) Molecular genetic analysis of highly conserved plastid sequences was used to prove the identity of the species Duboisia hopwoodii, D. myoporoides and D. leichhardtii. To evaluate different breeding options various flower characteristics have been analyzed by means of stereo microscopy for the three species. For D. hopwoodii and D. leichhardtii Description: Compact shrub to 4 m high and 3 m diam. Leaves narrow-elliptic or lanceolate to linear, 2-12 cm long, 1-13 mm wide, lamina glabrous, concolorous; petiole 0-3 mm long. Inflorescences narrow. Calyx 1.5-4.5 mm long, the lobes usually about a third as long as the tube. Corolla 7-15 mm long, white with purple striations in Duboisia hopwoodii (F.Muell.) F.Muell.
