This version of Alice in Wonderland from cult surrealist animator Jan Svankmajer then is a welcome change. Jan Svankmajer's Alice should be more considered a creative variation on a common set of characters than an actual adaptation of the book. Out the window goes all of Carroll's absurdist poetry; in comes a surreal slapstick. Jan Švankmajer's Alice is a deliciously dark take on Lewis Carroll's novel, with some of the best stop motion I've ever seen. I loved the way the animation meshes with live-action scenarios and how this film always made me feel frightened, delighted, perplexed and in awe by the stunning imagery. For me, Jan Svankmajer captures the story of Alice shares only a few aspects with the well-known 1951 Disney film adaptation, which also mixes in some of the characters from Carroll's 1871 sequel Through the Looking-Glass, such as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.Svankmajer stays strictly within the events of the original Adventures novel, aside from his own additions.
