A Brief History Of WWJ. June 24, 2010 / 10:29 AM EDT / CBS Detroit. WWJ 950 AM, "Newsradio 950" is Detroit, Michigan's only 24-hour all-news radio station. Broadcasting at 950 kHz, the station is THE DETROIT NEWS 950 RADIO IN THE SIXTIES During the 1930's and 40's, radio became America's leading source of entertainment with lavish productions and great stars. In the 50's, however, television absorbed the big entertainment shows, and radio concerned itself largely with news and music. For the 60's, WWJ developed new concepts and sources WWJ will air a special show, "WWJ at 100, a Century of News," at 7 p.m. Thursday to celebrate. WWJ wasn't just first in Detroit. Depending on how you slice things, it was the first commercial WWJ-TV (channel 62), branded CBS Detroit, is a television station in Detroit, Michigan, United States, owned and operated by the CBS television network. It is owned by the network's CBS News and Stations group alongside WKBD-TV, an independent station; the stations share studios on Eleven Mile Road in the Detroit suburb of Southfield.WWJ-TV's transmitter is located in Oak Park. The revolution began when an unlikely trio of Detroiters gathered in a Lafayette Boulevard office at the western edge of downtown. It was 8:15 p.m. on Friday Aug. 20, 100 years ago.
