History. Clunes was the site of Victoria's first gold strike. It is located in a steep valley surrounded by rounded hills, which are actually extinct volcanoes. Clunes has one of the best collection of well-preserved 19th century architecture. The New Zealand-born writer says Clunes partly reminds him of Rotorua, where he grew up.
