William Laird Cowher (born May 8, 1957) is an American sports analyst, former football player and coach. Following a six-year playing career as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), he served as a head coach in the NFL for 15 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.He began his coaching career as an assistant under Marty Schottenheimer for the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs Bill Cowher became the 15th coach in Steelers history when he was hired on Jan. 21, 1992. He replaced Chuck Noll as the second man to hold that job since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger. Dan Rooney's search for Noll's successor came down to two finalists, but he selected Cowher over Dave Wannstedt, a decision that yielded immediate dividends.
