On our Black History Month series, VOA's Diane Butts showcases Ethiopian entrepreneur Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu and her flair for shoes. Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu is the founder and MD of soleRebels (among other companies), a footwear entity established in 2004, which set out to reimagine the traditional Ethiopian "selate" and "barabasso" shoes. The soles of the shoes are made from recycled car tyres. Today, the company has stores all over the world, including in Ethiopia Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu (born 1980) is an Ethiopian businesswoman, founder, and executive director of soleRebels, Africa's "fastest growing footwear company". Bethlehem has received honors and accolades for her business acumen, as well as her efforts to shift the discourse on Africa away from poverty to the continent's entrepreneurial spirit, social capital, and economic potential. Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu was born in 1980 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to two hardworking parents who worked at a hospital in the impoverished Zenebework neighborhood (Mfonobong, 2012). Her home was unique for its time and place in that Bethlehem, the only girl in the family, was treated as an equal to her brothers, all chores being divvied out Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu is a tireless foot soldier taking Ethiopian entrepreneurship to the world.
