Rabbi Yehuda ben Shmuel ibn Abbas was one of Sephardic Jewry's most gifted poets. Born in Fez, Morocco in the 12th Century, ibn Abbas is best known for his poignant poetic retelling of Akedat Yitzchak - the Binding of Isaac. The poem is titled either by its opening words - "Et Shaarei Ratson L'Hipateach Et Shaarei Ratzon. Israel Prize for Hebrew Song winner, Yehoram Gaon and Prof. Moshe Ben-Basat, have launched an album of piyutim: Et Shaarei Ratzon - featuring traditional piyutim of Spanish and Ladino Jewry. The new album includes 14 familiar and classic piyutim, in special arrangements, some of which incorporate Ladino passages. Sephardic Jews precede the Biblical chanting of the story with this 12th century piyyut (liturgical poem) expressing the same story through dramatic imagery and cantorial/choral call and response. Each stanza ends with the refrain oked v'ne'ekad v'hamizbei'ach, "the binder, the bound, and the sacrifice.".
