Earlier this month, the Port of Portland announced four companies that won a bid to receive scraps—1,000 square yards each—of the carpet. One of the recipients, Aurora, Ore.-based Nagl Floor Covering, is partnering with area studio Yeobo Design through the online My PDX Carpet to upcycle the pieces into products such as doormats, coasters Portland Airport Flooring Fans Scrap for a Swatch; 28,000 Square Feet of Teal. Not for long, though. Last month, airport officials Movie and TV crews filming at the airport usually wanted to cover up the pattern, custom-designed in 1987 by a local SRG Partnership. A tealy turquoise number with pops of red and lavender and a loose runway inspiration, the old carpet had the '80s flavor of a Patrick Nagel painting or a disposable mouthwash cup. But to many, it meant home. The balance of the used PDX carpet was recycled into carpet pads totaling 45,000 square yards (134.48 tons or 8.3 acres). An Award-Winning Project.
