Blantyre (listen ⓘ or listen ⓘ; Scottish Gaelic: Blantaidhr) is a town and civil parish in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, with a population of 16,900. It is bounded by the River Clyde to the north, the Rotten Calder to the west, the Park Burn to the east (denoting the boundary with the larger adjoining town of Hamilton) and the Rotten Burn to the south. The climate of Blantyre and the West of Scotland in general is milder than that of Eastern Scotland due to the stronger maritime influence, as the prevailing winds blow from the sea. May and June are months with longest average sunshine. Average annual rainfall totals range from less than 1000 mm to 3500 mm.
