Scientists classify reproductive isolation in two groups: prezygotic barriers and postzygotic barriers. Recall that a zygote is a fertilized egg: the first cell of the development of an organism that reproduces sexually. Therefore, a prezygotic barrier is a mechanism that blocks reproduction from taking place; this includes barriers that postzygotic barriers to total reproductive isolation. This argument is based on the observation that prezygotic barriers are often individually stronger than postzygotic barriers and that prezygotic barriers act earlier over the life history of an organism than postzygotic barriers (Ramsey et al 2003; Coyne & Orr 2004; Nosil et al 2005; Kay 2006). Luxembourg is one of 17 countries in the OECD that have most legal protections for sexual and gender minorities. These countries are characterised by an above-average performance regarding both their level of legal LGBTI-inclusivity as of 2019 and their progress in legal LGBTI-inclusivity between 1999 and 2019 (Figure 1). When considering the total prezygotic and postzygotic barriers separately, the prezygotic barriers were stronger (0.8309) than the postzygotic barriers, which reached values of 0.5625 for F 2 progeny and 0.7875 for backcrossed progeny. These differences were more marked in LL (Fig. 5). Potential sexual prezygotic isolation was addressed by studying courtship and mating behavior. Postzygotic isolation, that is, the absence of fertilization, was studied by counting the number of hybrid F 1 female offspring.
