Amiga wasn't really a completely 16-bit system, either, but partially 32-bit. Your statement about "16-bit" graphics doesn't make sense. 16-bit graphics would have 65536 colors. 18-bit is of course 262144 (AGA-Amiga's HAM8 screenmodes allow this), and as we all know, 24-bit is 16777216 colors.
