The flame passage on a percussion breach plug allows the flame to travel up a passage to the main charge. On a flint the powder is much closer to the flame (pan) which enables better ignition. TC put model names on barrels at least in the early 1980s, probably back into the 1970s. The location of barrel markings has changed over the years.
