Goodman Gallery returns to Photo London with two presentations by South African artist Mikhael Subotzky. Exemplary photographs from three major bodies of work will be shown in a solo booth alongside the award-winning Ponte City project by Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse. Due to the potentially vast nature of this subject I have chosen to focus on one contemporary artist, Mikhael Subotzky, and his relationship with the one South African gallery he has been affiliated to throughout his entire professional career, the Goodman Gallery. As much as every person's life is different, every person's career is Goodman Gallery is one of the most distinguished and longest-standing international contemporary art galleries. Established in Johannesburg in 1966, the gallery works with artists who are at once contemporary, influential and strive to shift perspectives and engender social transformation. Founded during the era of apartheid, Goodman Gallery Subotzky was born in 1981 in Cape Town, South Africa. He first became interested in taking pictures during his gap year in Southeast Asia and went on to study Fine Arts at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town. His first body of photographic work, Die Vier Hoeke (The Four Corners), was an in-depth study of the South African penal system.
