A new series of ambitious temporary off-site projects by Gagosian Open begins with early works by Christo from the 1960s and 70s presented in a Grade II-listed Georgian town house in Spitalfields, built in 1723 to house Huguenot migrant families. Foreshadowing the artist's large-scale On Princelet Street in particular you can see evidence of how they altered the windows to enable great light into their top-floor silk-weaving studios. Spitalfields is famous for the silk weaving industry that boomed during the 18th Century and Princelet Street was at the heart of it. An English Heritage blue plaque on the end-of-terrace A Particular Address. At no. 19 is the Museum of Immigration and Diversity. It's rarely open to the public due to its fragility, but I recently went to an open day for a look inside the time capsule. The story of Princelet Street and Spitalfields in general is one of immigration. From Huguenots to Irish and Jews to Bengalis, waves of people While London is noticeably lacking a permanent museum of immigration, this is where, hopefully one day, 19 Princelet Street comes in. This unique building in Spitalfields is a window on the past and an insight to different waves of immigration which shaped our city. Princelet Street is a lovely road off Brick Lane full of 18th century terraced houses which have been mostly restored. Gertrude and Canopy Collections are thrilled to announce their first collaborative exhibition, Pourquoi London.
