Leaving Port Alberni, Highway 4 travels west to climb around Sproat Lake through the stunning mountain scenery of the Mackenzie Range and along Kennedy Lake to reach the west coast of Vancouver Island and the communities of Ucluelet and Tofino. The Nuu-cha-nulth native Indians used the name Ucluelet, which means "safe Harbour" when they settled a fishing village in the area centuries ago. Ucluelet is one of the oldest settlements on Vancouver Island. Its name is derived from the Nuu-chah-nulth phrase, Yu-clutl-ahts, meaning the people with a good landing place for canoes. It is believed that the Nuu-chah-nulth people have inhabited the land around the Barkley Sound for thousands of years.
