Karl (Carl) Goldmark (1830-1915) has a tenuous hold on the consciousness of even the keenest music-lovers and opera enthusiasts and is probably best-known for "Die Königin von Saba", although even this is a work rarely heard and even less rarely staged. His Rustic Wedding Symphony and First Violin Concerto are also occasionally heard. Karl (Carl) Goldmark, born as Karoly Goldmark and later sometimes known as Carl Goldmark was a Hungarian composer. Goldmark came from a large Jewish family, one of 20 children. His father, Ruben Goldmark, was a chazan to the Jewish congregation at Keszthely, Hungary, where Karl was born. Karl Goldmark's older brother Joseph Goldmark became a GOLDMARK, KARL (1830-1915), composer. Goldmark, the son of a cantor in the small town of Keszthely, was sent to study in Vienna. He was financed by his half-brother Joseph, who, however, was involved in the revolutionary activities of 1848 and had to leave the country. Rustic Wedding Symphony, Op. 26 (Ländliche Hochzeit) is a symphony in E-flat major by Karl Goldmark, written in 1875, a year before his renowned Violin Concerto No. 1.The symphony was premiered in Vienna on 5 March 1876, conducted by Hans Richter.
