Ionesco (1909-1994) was born in Romania but taken to France when he was an infant. As a result of this migration, he became proficient in French, leading to his later writing many Eugène Ionesco (26 November 1909 - 28 March 1994) was a Romanian writer writing in French, and was one of the foremost figures of the avant-garde theatre in the 20th century.
