Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was a Brazilian poet, novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, and literary critic. A mestizo (person of mixed heritage), he was born on 21 June 1839 at the Livramento Hill, a very poor area near the docks of Rio de Janeiro. His father was a house painter, and his mother died when he was very young.
