The temple houses the country's largest and most beautiful stone-carved idol of Lord Vishnu believed to have been made with a single block of black basalt stone of unknown origin. The sculpture is 5 meters long and lies in a resting position in a 13-meter long pond also called as a 'cosmic sea'. Vishnu idol in the lake was believed to Budhanilkantha. This site, situated at the foot of the Shivpuri hills in the northern-most part of the Kathmandu Valley, has probably the largest stone statue of Lord Vishnu in Nepal reclining on a bed of snakes in the middle of a pond. The five-meter-long granite image carved out of a single rock dates back to the Lichchhavi period. According It's believed the 16-foot (5-meter) long sculpture made from a single block of basalt, was created during the 6 th- century CE by Vishnugupta, an early king of the Kathmandu Valley.
