The LNER Class D40 was made up of the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) Class V and Class F locomotives. Class V consisted of thirteen saturated locomotives built between 1899 and 1915, whilst Class F consisted of eight similar but superheated engines built in 1920-1.
