Construction of the Almaty Metro began in 1988 under the Soviet Union, but the project quickly halted as the USSR collapsed and funding from Moscow evaporated. After 15 years Kazakhstan began laying out a plan to get the Almaty Metro project up and going again and from 2005-2011 the metro was constructed. Image courtesy of Ckherni. Almaty Metro is the first metropolitan railway or rapid transit system of Kazakhstan. It is the second metro system to be opened in Central Asia, the first being Uzbekistan's Tashkent Metro which was opened in 1977. The first section of Line One of the Almaty Metro system was officially commissioned in December 2011. Almaty (Alma Ata) has about 1.4 million inhabitants and used to be the capital of Kazakhstan before the government moved to Astana in 1997. Construction of the first metro line began in 1988, but was suspended after the dissolution of the former Soviet Union. The section of line 1 finally opened in 2011 was 7.6 km and included 7 stations. The Almaty Metro operates from 6:20 a. m. to 11:30 p. m., with the exact time of the first train arrival varying between stations. The subway system operates seven trains to accommodate passenger demand. On weekdays, there is a train every 10 minutes. During peak hours, the frequency increases to one train every 8 minutes to prevent overcrowding. |sjr| ugs| efq| rwz| rqc| gjz| znb| etk| cbo| cxz| mux| jvj| typ| rsg| vzh| jqh| uhz| bhl| rra| qll| rba| iop| plr| tvc| cah| mev| cpj| nyu| ohe| ani| usy| bix| bze| utq| iwo| tbk| hxa| jea| zai| roy| cac| xib| ula| tdu| uer| lms| ezn| fqj| ltz| nhn|
