Daniël Mijtens, known in England as Daniel Mytens the Elder, was a Dutch portrait painter who spent the central years of his career working in England. James Hamilton later 1st Duke of Hamilton, whom he painted as a seventeen-year-old in 1623 and again in 1629. Mijtens made visits to the Netherlands in 1626 and 1630, perhaps to study the Daniel Mytens was the main court painter to the English Crown before the arrival of van Dyck in 1632. He seems to have been influenced by the style of van Mierevelt in Delft and van Ravesteyn in The Hague. He arrived in England in 1618 and received many portrait commissions from the English aristocracy, among whom were the Duke and Duchess of Daniel Mytens was born in Delft but probably trained in The Hague. By 1618 he was in England and in 1621 had completed his first royal commission: a portrait of James I (National Portrait Gallery, London). On 19 July 1624 he was granted both a one-off payment of £25 and an annual pension, for life, of £50 from the Crown 'in consideracon of the good service donne unto us'. On her arm is a marmoset, at this time an animal highly prized for its rarity. On 4 June 1625 Daniel Mytens was appointed 'one of our Picture-Drawers of our Chamber in ordinarie' for life at £20 a year. This picture was hung in the Bear Gallery at Whitehall near Myten's other posthumous portraits of James IV and Mary, Queen of Scots. Daniel Mytens was born in Delft but probably trained in The Hague.
