Wild horses of Alberta. Alberta's population of wild horses, found west of Water Valley/Sundre, seem to be part of a yearly controversy when the herds are culled in the name of preserving grasslands. I find that difficult to think about, so I prefer to bask in the peacefulness and serenity these beauties exude in their natural environment. Since 2001, however, atrocities have continued to occur against the wild horses. Many have been shot and left to rot over the years. Then from November 1 st to March 1 st in a season, individuals buy permits to rope and trap them. Despite assurances over the years that only 20-30 horses were taken in any given season, we know this to be untrue. Wild horses have been a part of the Canadian west for hundreds of years. There are currently wild horses living in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia and parts of Saskatchewan, including a population of protected wild horses in the Bronson Forest. There are also approximately 900 wild horses in Alberta spread out The Wild Horses of Alberta Society is a charitable organization that works to rescue and rehabilitate wild horses that have been found injured or abandoned. They have an established adoption program and provide education and training on the gentling and handling of these amazing wild animals.
