His magnum opus, A branch line of the Seaboard, constructed in 1898, connected Lawrenceville with Loganville. The city grew slowly until the 1970s, when a boom in metropolitan Atlanta's growth spurred the growth of Lawrenceville and Gwinnett. Lawrenceville's population was 8,928 in 1980, and by 1990 it had nearly doubled to 17,250. Godowsky wrote three studies (Nos. 23-25) for the left hand alone based on Chopin's Op.25 No.1. Of these, No.24 is intended to give the impression of a piece for four hands: "If it is possible to assign to the left hand alone the work done usually by both hands simultaneously, what vistas are opened to future composers, were this Leopold Godowsky began composing his 53 Studies on the Chopin Études in 1894 when he was only 23, finishing two decades later. His fertile musical imagination and exceptional virtuosity ensure that the studies sound vastly more complex and daringly inventive than Chopin's original material. Godowsky was not attempting to improve Chopin's Études, but to use them as the basis for creating over fifty monumentally difficult studies, designed to serve the same purpose: to help improve technique, but to do it with musically worthwhile material.
