Millerton Lake State Recreation Area offers great boating, camping, and fishing. Visitors to the lake enjoy swimming and water skiing, hiking, and other outdoor recreation, including Bald Eagle Boat Tours in the winter. Millerton Lake is located only 20 miles northeast of Fresno. The reservoir was built by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of Millerton Lake, a stone's throw away from Fresno and CA-99 in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, is one of the San Joaquin River's largest reservoirs. The reservoir was named for the town of Millerton, the original seat of Fresno County. The town was inundated and wiped from the map when Friant Dam was built in 1942 and the lake was created in its stead. With 19 miles of shoreline and nearly Split between Fresno and Madera Counties in California's central valley, lies "one of California's greatest lakes". Millerton Lake spans 40 miles of coastline for boating, hiking, camping, and fishing and is one of the Central Valley's most treasured recreation areas. The lake was created by construction of the Friant Dam across the San Joaquin River in 1944. The park's camping facilities include boat camping.
