Second-hand copies of Baedeker's guides can be found in good antiquarian bookstores everywhere: some are collector's items (such as the 1934 German-language guide to Madeira and some of the early volumes by Karl Baedeker), but the mass-produced, revised editions (such as Switzerland and Northern Italy) are frequent, inexpensive, and have splendid folding maps of cities Baedeker's travel guides were the premium travel guides of the second half of the 19th and the first part of the 20th century, giving rise to the verse: "Kings and governments may err - but never Mr. Baedeker.". They are keenly collected, and some of them are extremely rare, like the famous and seldom seen "Athen" Baedeker from 1896 The history of the Baedeker publishing firm is to a great extent also that of the Baedeker family. The family could trace its publishing credentials back to Dietrich Baedeker, born in Bremen in 1660, who became a printer in Bielefeld. But the man who made the family name synonymous with good guide books (to the extent that, to this day, certain 1 D0, F1, E1,S1 are codes assigned by Hinrichsen (1988) to all editions of Baedeker guides. D0 is the (pre-)first German (Deutsch) travel handbook/guide, F1 - the first guide published in French All Baedeker editions on Paris. The City of Light has always been a popular destination for Baedeker readers. Editions of Paris, especially those in German, seem still to be particularly attractive to collectors.
