The elder uncle of the child Sri Tirumalai Nambi was serving in Tirupathi temple. As the child looked like Lakshmana the younger brother of Lord Rama, he named the Child Ilaya Azhwar. Ilaya means younger. The temple is believed to be the birthplace of Ramanuja, the exponent of Vaishtavaidata philosophy. The gold plated shrine in front of the hall of Ramanuja is built by the Maharaja of Mysore. The temple is open from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m and has six daily rituals at various times of the day. This is a three day festival called Guru pushyam and starts on Arudhra. Chitra Arudhra is the day Ramanuja avatharam happened. This is celebrated for 10 days as Avathara utsavam. There is a 10 day Brahmotsavam for Adikesava Perumal.
