WATER VALLEY - Before taking her guitar out of its case and staking a claim as one of the Deep South's finest singer-songwriters, Molly Thomas, a Fairhope, Ala., resident (and native Mississippian), turned plenty of heads as violinist on stage and in the studio with the likes of Guster, Todd Snider, Will Hoge, and Matthew Ryan, among others. For the first time in its 60-year history, openly lesbian contestants are competing to become Miss California.
