Jul 2014 • Friends. In most cities, the Corcoran Gallery of Art would be a "must see" and no tourist-reviewer would complain about the $10 entrance fee. But in DC, where the nearby monolithic, federally subsidized Smithsonian-system and National Gallery of Art dominate, the much smaller Corcoran can fall to a tertiary position. When the Corcoran Gallery of Art outgrew its Second Empire structure at the northeast corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, the museum elected to move to a larger site, leaving behind the handsome building designed by James Renwick and erected in 1859-1861 (see WH15, p. 000).
