Steely Dan is an American rock band founded in 1971 in New York by Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals). Originally having a full band lineup, by the end of 1974 Becker and Fagen chose to stop playing live and continue Steely Dan as a studio-only duo, utilising a revolving cast of session Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is in danger of becoming one of the biggest guitar heroes since the days of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Peter Green. Certainly his English fans have taken him to heart and at all Dan's concerts there have been yells for Jeff and cries of "Skunk!" In fact, Jeff would rather drop the "skunk As a cofounder of Steely Dan, he appeared on the group's iconic first three albums - Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, and Pretzel Logic - and performed sumptuous solos on numerous tracks, most notably "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Bodhisattva," and "My Old School." The CD, co-produced with CJ Vanston, features his incredible guitar work with songs of many different genres and features performances with Michael McDonald, Jonny Lang, Rick Livingstone and Clint Black. The Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers legend sits down to share gear war stories, explain what makes a good session player, and discuss his first solo album, the brilliant Speed of Heat Those guys - Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton and even Hank Marvin, who I have tremendous respect for - were students.
