James figure - an academic bachelor, cloistered in his rooms at college, enjoying cards and books and golf and with little connection to the outside world. The mezzotint then was put on display but never again did any changes occur in the engraving. The mezzotint was even tested to see whether any sympathetic ink was used in its making.
