Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690), while not widely known today, was an acclaimed etcher in the 17th century. Born in 1609, his family fled from Flanders to Amsterdam for religious reasons. Waterloo makes facile use of the etching medium by using a more shallow bite in the background, creating a realistic sense of spatial depth and atmospheric Etching. 225 x 289 mm.; 8 7/8 x 11 3/8 inches. Waterloo was born at Ryssel near Lille in north-central France. By 1630, however at the age of 21, Waterloo and his mother went to Painter, draughtsman and etcher, Anthonie Waterloo (Lille, ca. 1610 - Utrecht, 1690) is best known as a prodigious author of prints. A genuine autodidact, he worked in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leeuwarden. The National Museum of Art of Romania has fifty-one etchings by Waterloo, all of which come from the collection of Dr Ioan Cantacuzino Catalogue Raisonné. Title: A Path Through the Woods.
