It's beautiful from any angle and as the harbour wall is curved the perspective alters continuously, a good place to take your camera. Judging by the numbers fishing it can't be a bad place for fishing too. The access is good and the path wide but can be slippery when wet. Roker Beach was an unexpected visit and the sunshine and gusty wind on the pier were a fabulous experience. We were staying at a beach front hotel and couldn't resist taking a walk along the 609 metre long pier to the lighthouse. It was definitely a gusty breeze but there were dolphins in the distance and plenty of sea birds to watch. The River Wear Commissioners were founded in 1717 to preside over Sunderland's growing prosperity as a port, and with the help of engineers Sunderland's busy harbour was transformed. Work began in 1723 and the 1000ft-long pier was completed in 1730. In the 1780s, work began on the construction of the 700ft-long North Pier which was completed 10 years later. Then, in 1803, Sunderland's first Roker Lighthouse and Pier is a 'must see' part of Sunderland. I love the aesthetically pleasing curved pier and magnificent Lighthouse. It is a photographer's paradise and worth the bracing walk along the 609m of pier open to the public except in bad weather. This is the work of engineer Henry Hay Wake and has stood for over 119 years. The Festival of Light will be back in Roker Park for 2022, with ticket details expected to be announced soon.
