ERIE - Plastikos Medical officially opened its doors for business in September 2019 - down the street from Plastikos' headquarters - to focus on manufacturing precision molded product for class II and class III medical devices. During the development phase of the project, the owners strategically separated the facilities growth plans into two phases. International Recycling Group (IRG), a privately-held start-up company that's planning to build a large plastics recycling plant in Erie, Pa., has announced an initial round of US$9 million in investments from Erie Insurance and plastics packaging supplier The Plastek Group. In an Aug. 19 statement, IRG said the US$100-million facility in The Erie, Pa.-based company completed the first building in its medical business in 2019 and has added 10 medical injection molding machines since then. The second building will more than double the size of the current ISO-7 cleanroom to 24,000 ft² to accommodate an additional 15 medical injection molding machines to meet increased demand from Phase II is slated to begin March 2021. Phase I of Plastikos Medical consists of today's current structure, which was completed in 2019: a 25,000-square-foot facility with 12,000 square feet dedicated to an ISO-7 cleanroom molding floor and accommodating 10 brand new (Arburg) medical injection molding machines. Plastikos. announced today that it has started construction on a new 33,000-square-foot stand-alone medical manufacturing facility, located less than a quarter of a mile from the company's Erie, Pa. headquarters..
