In the Bible, the Edomites are the descendants of Esau, Jacob 's twin and Isaac's oldest son (Genesis 36). The Edomites controlled an area east of the Arabah, from the Zered to the Gulf of Aqaba. Their capital was Bozrah, which sat in the northern part of their territory. Although no name of an Edomite deity is given in the Bible Edom was a kingdom based in the territory to the south and east of the Dead Sea, covering parts of modern day Israel and Jordan. Known for its mountainous terrain, it is also closely associated with the hill country of Seir in the Hebrew Bible (Gen 32:3; Gen 36:8). Part of the region would later become known as Idumea, a designation that is Edom was a biblical empire primarily related to Esau and his offspring. The Edomites were connected to the Israelites through Jacob, the father of the brothers Jacob and Esau. They are also known as Idumeans, as Idumea was used by the Greeks and Romans for the country of Edom. The phrase "Edom" is found 100 times in scripture (including Genesis 36:1-3 Edom heads the list of Israel's enemies in Psalm 83.
