To the Editor: The topical chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is commonly used to treat squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC).1 For patients who wish to avoid procedures or are not good surgical candidates, 5-FU may be a preferred treatment option. It is less expensive than some procedures and other topicals (ie, imiquimod).2 The reported Efudex spot treatments. Spot treating with Efudex, for me, is a completely different animal than treating large areas. I have treated my face and my chest and, having done so, found that I much prefer spot treating. Treating large areas does rid my skin of multiple precancerous spots at once, but the side effects make for one rough ride. The cream absorbs more and more quickly as the days go by, and the treated area stiffens, tugs and pulls when you move, and this can cause the burning sensations to temporarily intensify. It's during erosion that I feel much better sitting as still as possible. Erosion makes daily life and work activities difficult.Ensure proper use of sunscreen (SPF 30+) prior to sun-exposure to prevent further sun damage and sunburn. The cream directly targets and eliminates pre-cancerous and cancerous cells form the skin while having little effect on normal skin cells.
