Aeschylus and Prometheus Bound Background. Aeschylus was born in 525 B.C. Eleusis, his birthplace, was known for its mystical rituals of worship to the Earth goddess Demeter. Biographers enjoy attributing the mysticism of the author's plays to this early influence. According to legend, Dionysus, the god of wine and drama, appeared to Aeschylus Prometheus. As a result, he experiences something like a split personality disorder, as rebellion slowly takes over from intellect and progress. In the first stage, Prometheus stands as the intellectual figure. Prometheus Bound is a play by the ancient Greek tragedian Aeschylus that was likely written around 456 BCE. It tells the story of Prometheus, a Titan who defies the gods by giving fire to humanity and is subsequently punished by Zeus. The play was likely a part of a trilogy that also contained plays titled Prometheus Unbound and Prometheus the Full Title: Prometheus Bound. When Written: Unknown. Most likely, Prometheus Bound was written near the end of Aeschylus's career (late 450s BCE); however, if the play was not written by Aeschylus, some scholars believe it could have been written as late as 430 BCE.
