The death was announced in Alice Springs last night of the leading Desert artist Michael Nelson Jagamara. The Warlpiri man wasn't amongst the first in Papunya to take to the canvas when the art movement took off there in 1972. He watched the older men closely and waited until 1983 to start painting in his own name. Michael Jagamara Nelson b. c.1949 Also known as Michael Nelson Tjakamarra Artist (Painter) One of Australia's most celebrated Aboriginal artists who started painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1983, and went on to achieve both national and international acclaim. In 1987 a 27' painting by Michael Nelson was installed in the foyer of the Kumantje Jagamara AM (c.1946 - November 2020), also known as Kumantje Nelson Jagamara, Michael Minjina Nelson Tjakamarra, Michael Nelson Tjakamarra and variations (Kumantye, Jagamarra, Jakamara), was an Aboriginal Australian painter. He was one of the most significant proponents of the Western Desert art movement, an early style of contemporary Indigenous Australian art. Jagamarra was born at Vaughan Springs in the Northern Territory in 1949. He first saw white men at Mount Doreen Station and remembers hiding in the bush in fear. Michael lived at Haasts Bluff for a time with the same family group as Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra. Later his parents took him to Yuendumu for European education at the mission school. He left school after initiation and worked pig Michael Nelson Jagamarra. Born in 1946 in Vaughan Springs, Michael Nelson was taught sand paintings, body paintings and shield paintings by his grandfather when he was a boy.
